What a blessing it is to get a box full of hand-me-downs. Digging through the new treasure is just plain fun, but what about when you get a perfectly good item of clothing – and you child just won’t wear it? Embellish it!
My Haley is a bit picky about a lot of things. She tried on this dress. It fit fine with room to still grow – but it’s just plain brown. That won’t do! She told me I should put stripes or a baby on it. I asked if a flower would be suitable. “Sure. I like flowers.”
When starting a new project, picking the fabric is always the hardest part! Is it the same for you? Luckily (or unluckily?!?!?) I have plenty to choose from. Do I use a new print? An old favorite? Should I dig through my end of bolt boxes? Or cut new fabric straight from the bolt? Well, the fabric calling my name last night was Sugar Snap. It’s the new line from Melissa Averinos and is perfect for my flower on the brown dress! (I used the prints Tendril in Fireball and Jade as well as Wallpaper in Cocoa.) I think maybe it’s because the line reminds me of my daughter’s personality. In an interview Melissa said, “Sugar Snap is a sweet collection with some flair!”
After cutting out the petals, I used Heat-n-Bond to hold the petals in place on the dress. Then I stitched around the edges to really secure the flower – Simple as that! The hardest part really was deciding on the fabric.
Haley loves her new dress. She wears it proudly now that it has a pretty flower added to the front.
