Autumn

Why is it that people love Halloween so much? Maybe it’s the candy or the costumes, but my guess is that it is the time of year. Autumn is a delightful season! For me it is easy to get excited with the change in weather, the great colors, the delicious food, and so I want to celebrate! What is there to celebrate? Well, Halloween of course! The kids have fun, the parents have fun…everyone has fun!!!

It’s the time of year we travel to the pumpkin patch. We ride in horse drawn wagons to the field to search for the perfect pumpkin. Plus there is a corn maze, great food, and many other ways to entertain our family of five. Another autumn tradition for our family is a trip to Apple Annie’s where we pick our own apples. Some are to eat and some are for pies, muffins and bread! And we can’t leave without a glass of fresh apple cider. YUMMY!!!!

To help you celebrate Autumn, I have made some Halloween and Fall themed shirts and accessories for my Etsy store. (I’m still debating if I should list them on eBay too….what do you think?) I have sizes 12 months through 5T available. (12mo, 18mo, and 24mo are onesies. 2T, 3T, 4T and 5T are shirts.) If you need a different size, please let me know. I can probably find it for you! Choose from black or creme colored long sleeved t-shirts as well as traditional or fringe appliqué. Add a name or initial if you would like. You design the shirt! How fun 🙂 If you live in an area that is not quite ready for long sleeves (i.e. Tucson) I would be happy to make one for you with short sleeves!

For the boys (yeah, I know they get left out of fun clothing stuff a lot) I have these adorable monster shirts!!!! Choose from any of the 10 monsters available. The thread color on the monsters can easily be changed. You can add a name or initial under, on top or to either side of the monster. Have the monster say Boo! or put a saying like Mommy’s Monster! You design the shirt 🙂 The same sizes are available. They come in gray or night sky blue. I have the long sleeved shirts ready to go, but could get more short sleeved t-shirts if you prefer. Okay, have fun shopping!!!!

Visit my Etsy Store by clicking here!

You may wonder, “Do I need to join Etsy to buy these shirts?” Yes, but joining Etsy is free! You can pay with Paypal or send a check or money order, just like on my website!!! Please feel free to ask me any questions. I’ll post a blog about the wonderful site of Etsy in the next few days. Oh, or you could always email me directly to place an order.

What to give…what to give

I have such a hard time with gifts! Isn’t that the craziest thing you have ever heard? I go ’round and ’round. Should I buy something? Should I make something? Should it be useful or fun? Would they like this, or would they like that better? ACK! It’s terrible. So, as my family knows, this means I usually just don’t do anything!!! Horrible. I know…you don’t have to tell me. I figure this is just the beginning. With Kyle in school and Haley starting preschool, we will be invited to several birthday parties this year (and for years to come!)

So, one of Kyle’s classmates just turned five. I have a child that is five….you would think this would be especially easy! The problem is that she is a girl….my girl is only 3, so maybe 3 year olds don’t like the same things as 5 year olds. What am I to do?!?!? This is what I ended up making. I hope she likes it. I have some sticker sheets and glittery things to go inside. If it goes over well then maybe I’ll make more as gifts to give throughout the year. The inside is the pink polka dot material. (I used material I had on hand…..so my mom can be proud of me for not going and buying more fabric!!!!!)

Oh…and in case you were wondering, her name starts with M 🙂

Proud new owner

That’s right, baby! I got this awesome iPod Shuffle for my birthday!!!! (The picture belongs to Apple, it is from their website which is linked above.) This little beauty will be going with me almost everywhere! But don’t worry, I’ll still use my Mini in my sewing area and in the kitchen.

I got the shuffle on Thursday night. I only had a minute on Friday morning to add some songs before I had to take the kids to school and head to the gym. So, I am setting up a little online poll for you to guess who I added first to my newest gadget. It is located on the left of the blog at the very top. So hopefully you won’t miss it!!! Go ahead and vote! I’ll reveal the answer next week…and hopefully before then I’ll have time to add some more music to this bad boy!

By the way, here’s some extra cool facts about the shuffle. It can hold 240 songs and is only 1.62″x1.07″x.41″. It weighs 0.55 ounces (Guess I’ll have to subtract that from the amount I lift at the gym!) It is available in 5 awesome colors and clips right onto your clothing.

Happy Birthday to me!

Happy Birthday to me! This morning I skipped the gym (gasp!) and instead treated myself to a creamy cappuccino. We then enjoyed a morning in the park. The weather is just perfect for a morning in the park.

The rest of the morning was pretty boring…buying embroidery thread and twill just can’t be made exciting, no matter how you twist it! My intension yesterday was to write a whole entry in pirate speak since Sept. 19th was talk like a pirate day! I ran out of time and energy though. In fact, I’m still worn out from my TAG entry. That really took it out of me 🙂

Tag…You’re it!

Take a breath. Inhale, exhale….This is big. Maybe you should sit down. Wait, if you’re reading this you should be at a computer…so you’re probably already sitting down. Are you ready? I have been tagged by Thanita! Now I must reveal 8 things about myself and then tag 8 new people. Those people then tell the world 8 things about themselves and tag 8 more people. What a fun blogging game, right?!

Well, let me just tell you that this has caused quite the commotion with-in my little brain. I mean, try to imagine it. Should I reveal my innermost thoughts? What about my deepest darkest secrets? Should I focus on business or personal things? What is a girl to do?!?!?!? And then the biggest question of all, who should I tag? There is a lot at stake here. This blog must not be entered into lightly. I have been a nervous wreck since I found out I had been tagged. I’m not joking! I don’t think I have stopped sweating since then. Well there you go, that’ll be number one.

1.I perspire profusely.

I don’t think I know anyone that sweats more than I do. Well, maybe my cousin’s little girl….but she is also running around a lot, so it’s hard to tell. 🙂 When I get nervous…oh boy, it’s bad and instantaneous. One time, in college, my boyfriend (now husband) got a new car that was a stick shift. So he let me drive it to a mall. I had never owned a stick shift and was not super comfortable driving one. All was going well….until I came to a stoplight in the middle of a hill. HOLY COW! I was so nervous. My little hands clutched that steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white. Sweat started dripping off of my brow. I turned to him and asked “Is it hot?” The A/C went on full blast. I made it without rolling into the car behind me. I’m pretty sure I had to start in 2nd gear, but I made it. Needless to say, my shirt was soaked by then….but that’s ok. We were at a mall, so I could buy a new one!

Now, mostly my constant perspiration is a pain, but it does have it’s advantages. You see when I go to the YMCA each morning I can run on the treadmill for like 2 minutes and be in a full-fledged, shirt drenching, dripping off your face sweat. So, I always think that people look at me and think “Wow, she must have had a good work out.” Those elliptical machines are even better…it only takes me like 45 seconds to start sweating on one of those!

So today I went to Target and bought that clinical strength deodorant. I hope it works. I have heard that you can get shots (like botox or something) that will stop you from sweating. I’m not sure that I could handle this. You see, I hate needles. Ok…number 2 coming up!

2. Needles make me nauseous.

It’s a problem when you have 3 kids that have all been vaccinated. I know several people who are No-Vax, and I contemplated being one of them…not because I am against foreign bodies being injected into you, or because I think that they cause autism or any of those reasons. My only reason would be I don’t want to see my kids get a shot. In fact, I can’t even look. I have to hold their legs down and their hands away, but you can be sure that I look away when the nurse brings out the needle.

Being diagnosed with Diabetes (myself or one of my children) would be horrible for me. I don’t think I could handle the insulin shots. I would probably pass out each time. It would also be bad because it would mean I had to watch what I eat. Aha! Number 3!

3. I enjoy eating.

Yep, I do. I know people who merely eat to survive. Well, that is not me! I like to eat…maybe a little too much. I like sweet treats and all…but my real vice is salty things, like potato chips. Wavy Lays to be specific. I can’t buy them, because I will eat them ALL. I do let myself buy a bag when we have people over and grill hamburgers and hot dogs. I always want to make something more fancy…but then a few things come into play. First of all, I usually wait until the last minute to plan. (Procrastination…that’ll be number 4.) Secondly, if it gives me a reason to buy Wavy Lays, then it is good. And lastly, I figure there are only a few people who don’t eat hamburgers and hot dogs, so it’s always a safe meal to have with guests.

4.I am proficient at procrastination.

Yep, if there is one thing I could not improve upon, it is my ability to procrastinate. I am not saying that I sit around and do nothing….that is not the case at all. I manage to fill my time with all sorts of things. Some of them productive (like sewing things for people), some of them …not so much (like say, this blog?!?!?). I make lists like a mad women. I have production goals, future business ideas, meal ideas, shopping lists, cleaning goals. List making may just be one of my forms of procrastination, but I tell myself that in the long run it helps me stay a little bit more organized. Maybe?!?!?

One of my friends is a post it girl. She has post its everywhere. She even put a post it onto her wallet to remind her that she needed to put gum into the wallet. Why not just add the gum right way? Well, she apparently has a procrastination problem too! She always makes me laugh.

5. Laughing is living.

I am not the funniest person on the face of this earth. I know that. It doesn’t stop me, however, from laughing at myself. We laugh a lot in our family. The kids are hysterical. They are always up to something. And Kyle has a contagious laugh. (He has also perfected the evil laugh…that kinda makes me nervous!) Haley and Taylor will just start cracking up when he laughs. Then no one can stop. Did that ever happen to you in school?

I remember one time in elementary school my friend and I started laughing. Who in the heck knows why…but we could not stop. We tried hard. The teacher gave us that look. You know the one! Then we would look at each other and start cracking up again. We had to be separated…and probably had to stay inside at recess. I have another good elementary school story. It’ll be number 6 on my list.

6. I puke on people.

Yep, it’s true. It happened in 3rd grade. I was sick. If memory serves, I went home sick on the first day of school. I’m fairly certain that my mom thought I was faking it…although I don’t know why I would, I always enjoyed school (see #5). Anyway, back to the story. I was sick for several days. Finally, my mom made me go back. The morning was going alright, until reading time. While each group met, we had to sit quietly and read a book. Well, all the kids had been placed into reading groups, but since I had been sick the teacher had not evaluated me. So as I sat reading my book, I started to get dizzy and my stomach started aching. You know the feeling. For me this is accompanied by profuse perspiration (see #1), although I am not sure if that is how it goes for everyone or not. Anyway, I digress. So I am feeling sick to my stomach….but the teacher is in the middle of the reading group! Finally I can’t take it any more. I have to go to the nurse or bathroom or somewhere besides that little desk. I stand up…and it’s too late. I puked right on the poor kid in front of me. He stood up quickly and shouted “Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Smith!” She doesn’t even look up, but responds by saying, “Not right now, I’m in the middle of a reading group.” “But Melanie puked on me!” Needless to say, I was sent home. I returned some time the next week. After my return, we had a nice discussion as a class regarding the rules and when they could be broken. It was made quite clear that if you have to puke, you do not have to ask permission to get out of your seat. Teachers are the best!

7. Teachers are Tops

I don’t know if there is a profession that I admire more. These people are amazing. I come from a family that has a lot of teachers. My mom, my sister, my sister-in-law, my Grandma, my aunts and even a couple of my cousins are (or were) all teachers. They work hard….much harder than me! I can’t imagine putting as much time, effort and love into all that they do when it’s not even your own child! So hats off to all the teachers out there! And that brings me to number 8….

8. I love my little ones lots!

I love them so much more than I had ever imagined was possible. They make me laugh. They make me cry. They make me crazy. They make me proud. They make me who I am. I am a stay at home mom who runs a sewing business out of a crazy but love filled home. I wouldn’t trade it for all the riches in the world!

So there you go…..eight things about me. I hope you were amused by my attempt at alliteration! It turns out there were many more things I could have told you. Luckily the number only had to be 8!!! And now…for who I am going to tag! I decided that I am going to tag other moms who also blog!
